metaf2xml analiza y decodifica reportes del clima de la aviación rutinario (METAR, SPECI), pronósticos de aeródromo (TAF) y observaciones sinópticas (SYNOP) y almacena los componentes como XML (todo hecho en Perl). También ofrece hojas de estilo XSLT para transformar los datos XML a un lenguaje sencillo (texto, HTML), o XML con diferentes esquemas y una interfaz de usuario de líneas de comandos y una de la web (CGI).

La última versión (2009-08-09) es 1.37 (TAR, ZIP), e incluye también LEEME, registro de cambios, ToDo (todos en Inglés), distinfo, y DTD.
La información de METAR y SPECI (observación del tiempo) y TAF (pronóstico del tiempo) es esencial para planar vuelos y para decisiones en vuelo (vuelos reales y simulados). Es recopilado regularmente por los meteorológicos a unos 3500 aeropuertos de todo el mundo y distribuido a través redes confiables y no públicas. La información de SYNOP es recogida por más de 11000 estaciones meteorológicas tripulados y no tripulados de todo el mundo y se utiliza para pronosticar el tiempo y estadísticas climáticas. El formato original de los mensajes es abreviado, algunos de los artículos están codificados. El formato de los mensajes (y mucho más sobre observar y presentar el tiempo) se especifica en el WMO Manual No. 306 o el el Annex 3 to the Convention on International Civil Aviation; algunos países apartan de lo normal o ampliarlo, algunos han publicado documentation (por ejemplo Federal Meteorological Handbook No. 1 y No. 2 para los EE.UU.). Especialmente el formato de las comentarios en los mensajes METAR y TAF y la codificación de las secciones 3 y 5 depende de gran medida del paíso o hasta la estación de observación.
metaf2xml puede ser utilizado por las simulaciones de vuelo o de pilotos privados (estudiandos) que quieran ampliar sus conocimientos sobre los formatos de mensaje, y todos los que simplemente quieran saber el tiempo actual o la previsión meteorológica de una estación en el lenguaje sencillo (ver ejemplos más abajo).

La página inicial del proyecto se encuentra en SourceForge.net, los lanzamientos también son anunciados en freshmeat.net. La última versión incluye el analizador, el esquema DTD, los hojas de estilo XSLT para transformar el XML a un lenguaje sencillo, los guiones Perl para las interfaces de usuario, y todo para instalarlos.
Con la versión de demostración con gráfica (hace uso de Ajax), los estaciones son marcado con un punto en un mapa. Es posible ver el mapa en ampliaciones differentes y moverlo por hacer clic y arrastrar. Los mensajes procesados son mostrados bajo el mapa, con el petición mas actual encima. La lista de estaciones es fijada pero también podría ser creado dinámicamente, por ejemplo de una base de datos.
Los mensajes por las estaciones son traído desde archivos en el servidor sourceforge. Son mensajes del pasado y son actualizados de vez en cuando. sourceforge.net no permite conexiones hacia afuera, por eso no es posible traerlos del red.
También se puede rellenar mensajes meteorológicos, que requiere seleccionar el tipo del mensaje (METAR, TAF, SYNOP).
Con la versión de demostración a base de texto, se puede rellenar los mensajes meteorológicos. Si está seleccionado la opción "código(s) OACI" o "código(s) OMM", los mensajes son traído de los archivos en el servidor sourceforge, como por la versión de demostración con gráfica.
